Following up from my previous post and after trying out GFE for a little bit I decided to turn this into a mini-series as I embark on the journey of expanding my skills.
Self bait-and-switch
Though it may not be obvious at first, GFE is divided into 2 platforms:
- GreatFrontEnd Interviews
- GreatFrontEnd Projects
During my initial perusal of the platform (before I purchased), I signed up and clicked through the different buttons. Though this does seem like a lack of research on my part, it’s definitely a bit of a dark pattern to know that paying so much for one does not give full access to the other given that they go so far as to share the same domains. That’s the first con - GFE Projects needs a separate subscription.
The platform
The welcome screen puts everything front and center. As someone who has used a lot of learning platforms from the OG Codecademy to the modern egghead.io, it’s a great look. The efficiency of it reminds me of the (now deprecated) BitDegree Courses wherein the platform would give daily quests and allow one to build their “BitDegree City” as they progressed along learning paths. Speaking of…
Learning paths
It’s nothing new, but I’m glad that GFE allows us to choose a path that suits us:
The editor
The editor is excellent:
- Tabs
- Themes
- Autocomplete
- Multi-cursor support
- Timer
- Tests
- Console
Conclusion
That’s all for the first look into the platform. I’ve completed 4 of the “Easy” Coding assignments - it’s definitely a lot like LeetCode and so far there’s nothing mind-blowing. But I suppose I’ll understand what I’ve gotten into when I go through the Interview Section.
